Guyana independence celebrations at York College

A rhythmic mix of the Guyanese culture will revv up the Performing Arts Center of York College, on Guy Breuer in Jamaica, at the 11th Annual Guyana Day celebration to commemorate Guyana’s 45th year as an independent nation.

Councilmember Leroy Comrie will join the Guyana Day Committee (GDC) to recognize six expatriates whose cultural excellence has impacted their community during an awards segment, on Sunday, May 15, at 3:00 p.m.

Guest of honor and storyteller Ken Corsbie, will lead a group of performers that include the Supertones Band with Princess Anissa and Avinash.

Also hitting the stage are King Raj, Anant, Pally and Omesh, Afrcan drummer, Akoyaw Rudder, Avirodh Sharma, the NYC Bangra Dance Group Impressions, New Revelations Dance Theatre, Classical Indian dancer Romanee Kalicharran, direct from Guyana three-time Calypso Monarch, the Mighty Rebel, and many other artists.

Under the theme Unity and Progress Celebrating Our Heritage, Culture and Achievements, GDC president Harry Bissoon said, “Guyana Day brings together diverse, multi disciplinary Guyanese artistes of all ages, from all ethnic and cultural backgrounds who, will present traditional and folk expressions and new works inspired by our immigrant experiences in the U.S.”

Folk Fest Nominations

Meanwhile the Guyana Cultural Association – organizers of the annual folk festival, is calling for nominations for its prestigious awards to be handed out at Brooklyn Borough Hall this summer. The nomination process ends Saturday, May 14.
