Essay Contest

Assembly William Scarborough announced the Second Annual One In A Million Essay Contest for fathers who actively participate in the educational & developmental life of a child. Open to all students in grades K-12 in School Districts 28 & 29 in Southeast Queens. Children in grades K-2 are asked to create a pictorial essay with a 1 or 2 sentence caption; grades 3-5, 150 words; grades 6-8, 250 words & grades 9-12, 500 words. Entries will be judged on style, content, grammar & originality & should be typed, double spaced or printed neatly & include name, school, grade & telephone number. Entry deadline Friday, May 30, 2011; one finalist per grade; children & fathers will be honored at the annual father’s day cookout on June 4 at Roy Wilkins Park. Volunteers Wanted

Hundreds of volunteers are needed on Saturday, 5/14, at 9:00 a.m. to place American flags at the graves of 4,500 Civil War veterans & Sunday, 5/29 at 9:00 a.m. to place luminary candles next to each of the flags at Historic Green-Wood Cemetery commemorating the 150 anniversary of the start of the Civil War. Meet at the Gothic Arch, inside the 25 St. & 5th Ave. entrance; R train to 25th St. in Brooklyn & walk up the hill one block & into the cemetery. Free parking available.
