Del.icio.usAlumnae of one of St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ more prestigious secondary schools, the Girls High School (GHS), will on Apr. 10 celebrate in grand style the 100th anniversary of their alma mater.
The Girls High School Alumnae Association, New York, will mark the occasion with a gala luncheon and award ceremony at Grand Prospect Hall, 263 Prospect Ave., Brooklyn.
“This event gives an opportunity to alumnae, friends and well-wishers who cannot make it to the big events taking place in St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” said Dr. Joyce Toney, the group’s long-serving president.
Toney and fellow GHS alumni, attorney Marva Prescod, the group’s co-founder, will be honored at the event.
“This celebration is a perfect way to commemorate a school that is arguably among the best in St. Vincent and the Grenadines,” Tony told Caribbean Life.
Attorney May C. Davy, the group’s secretary, said that in addition to being highly successful in their careers, the honorees have “faithfully worked to help Vincentians here and at home.”
She said the Girls High School Alumnae Association, New York, is also privileged to have La Celia Prince, St. Vincent and the Grenadines’ Ambassador to the United States, as the keynote speaker.
Dr. Toney said all funds raised at the event will help their alma mater.
She said the group has, over its 30-year-existence, provided to their alma mater scholarships, trophies and other graduation paraphernalia, as well as funds in helping to build a science center and the upkeep of the library.
The local celebration culminates with a series of events during the first week of May, which include a sports day, career day, arts and crafts day, a gala dinner, and an ecumenical church service.
Toney said the GHS was opened in 1911 as “a private school for the elite.”
But, today, she said it is a “democratic institution that welcomes girls who excel in their primary school education, and look forward to a rigorous, progressive education,” stating that the current enrollment is about 800 students.
