Vigil raises $800 towards HIV/AIDS

Team Carib Connect raised more than $800 during its second Annual Candlelight Vigil in observance of World Aids Day in Queens on Saturday, Dec. 3. 2011.

“We are so grateful for all the support that we have gotten,” Team Carib Connect Founder Jacqueline Bennett said. “The event proved that the Caribbean community can stand together for an important cause.”

“The success of the team’s candlelight vigil this year comes from the dedication and commitment of a few along with the community uniting for a cause,” Team Member Kimsue Bryan said.

“I believe our mission this year was most accomplished when the information presented motivated attendees to get tested and know their status, in addition to raising funds for an organization whose mission is to save lives.”

The vigil, which took place at Upper Deck Restaurant in Queens, included presentations, free HIV testing and a performance by Ed Robinson. All the proceeds from the candles sold will be given to the Montego Bay based “Children of Faith,” a non-profit organization that helps children and their families in rural parishes who are infected or affected by HIV/AIDS.

“The success of this year’s vigil as well as the many walks and events that Team Carib Connect has participated in shows how with a collaborative effort, a few dedicated individuals can have an impact on the community,”Michael-Andre Williams, team member and CFO of Irie Jam Media said.

“The support we’ve been given has shown great growth, which is very encouraging.”

Team Carib Connect started in 2009. In the last three years, the team has walked and raised monies for causes that have touched the lives of millions within the Caribbean community. The team has been dedicated to causes such as breast cancer, prostate cancer, sickle cell, diabetes, autism, heart disease and HIV/AIDS.

“I am honored to have been a part of this team since the beginning,” said team member Danielle De Souza.

“I have watched it grow and the amount of support that we received during the candlelight vigil has shown me that it will continue to flourish.”

Team Carib Connect would like to thank all of the attendees and sponsors who have given their time, support and contributions to this year’s candlelight vigil. The team is still accepting donations to reach its $1,500 target.
