It’s been four years and the legacy of the late Community Leader and owner of the Dorsey Art Gallery of 553 Rogers Avenue, Lawrence P. Dorsey, continues proudly with the street co-naming ceremony unveiling “Lawrence P. Dorsey Way” at the corner Rogers Avenue and Fenimore Street.
The ceremony took place on Wednesday Oct. 26 at the St. Mark’s Baptist Church of Rogers Avenue followed by the street sign unveiling and then reception next door at the Dorsey Art Gallery.
More than 150 guests including public officials, members of the Dorsey family, members of the Dorsey Art Club, local community residents, clergy leaders and notable artists (including James Brown, Ann Tanksley, Teddy Gunn, Emmett Wigglesworth and Otto Neals) were in attendance.
Among the guest speakers present included Councilman Mathieu Eugene, Una Clarke - representing Congresswoman Yvette Clarke, Elizabeth Koch - representing Borough President Marty Markowitz, Jennifer Stewart-Hutchinson - Dorsey Art Club spokesperson and event MC, Brooklyn Artist Emmett Wigglesworth and Laurette Jackson – daughter of the late Lawrence P. Dorsey.
The unveiling of the “Lawrence P. Dorsey Way” sign demonstrates the community’s recognition of the rich legacy that Dorsey left behind. With great pride the members of Dorsey Art Club continues Dorsey’s work, with the exhibition of six artwork shows featuring notable artists annually and with the monthly “Second Saturdays” events, a free art class program offered to the community at the Dorsey Art Gallery.
This special request for the “Lawrence P. Dorsey Way” street co-naming was made possible through the tireless efforts of the members of the Dorsey Art Club, the unanimous support of the members of the Community Board 9, the hundreds of petition signatures of community support and with the support of Councilman Mathieu Eugene.
