Chanderpaul set for another record

West Indies middle-order batsman Shivnarine Chanderpaul is set to surpass Desmond Haynes as the region’s second-highest run scorer in One-Day Internationals when the Windies meet Sri Lanka next month in the ODIs.

The ODIs, which were due to start, last week, have been rescheduled for next month due to persistent rains in Sri Lanka, which forced the three-test series to end in a draw.

Chanderpaul, 36, is now level with Haynes on 8,648 runs and will climb to 15th on the all time list, should he get off the mark in Sri Lanka.

It is unlikely that the Guyanese left-hander will be able to reach Brian Lara’s West Indies record of 10,348 by the end of his career. However, Chris Gayle, 31, who is on 7,830 is just 2,518 runs away of the Trinidadian Lara.

Lara is eighth on the all-time list, which is led by India’s Sachin Tendulkar (17,598), while Sri Lanka’s Sanath Jaysauriya (13,428), and Australia’s Rickey Ponting (13,082) are in third place.
