An all-Bronx production of Handel’s “Messiah,” followed by A Taste Of The Bronx Food Show And Tastings, featuring free food sampling by leading Bronx restaurants will be held on Sunday, Dec. 12 at 3:00 p.m. at Lehman Center for the Performing Arts’ Concert Hall, 250 Bedford Park Blvd. West on the campus of Lehman College in the Bronx.
This event is being organised by theLehman Center for the Performing Arts and The Bronx Tourism Council.
The unique production of “The Messiah,” under the direction of Michael Spierman, features The Bronx Opera Chorus, The Orchestra of the Bronx and a diverse group of community members from the borough reading the text.
“This is the sixth triumphant year that we are collaborating with the Bronx Opera on this production, and the fifth year that the Bronx Tourism Council has come on board to bring the community the Taste of the Bronx Food Show. It is our special holiday gift to the borough,” said Eva Bornstein, executive director of Lehman Center.
“The Messiah Concert and the Taste of the Bronx Food Show give concert goers a unique opportunity to feed body and soul,” said Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz Jr. “With a record number of Bronx restaurants being recognized by publications like Zagat Survey and the Michelin Guide, it’s an especially good time to celebrate some of the best eateries in our borough. I encourage Bronxites and visitors to bring their families to this very special holiday event.”
Composed in 1741, “Messiah” stands alone as a majestic monument to the human spirit and the aspirations of man. Ludwig van Beethoven said, “Handel is the greatest composer that ever lived. I would uncover my head and kneel down at his tomb.”
Michael Spierman, director of the Bronx Opera, conducts the Chorus and Orchestra. The production includes soloists from the acclaimed Bronx Opera: Emily Newton, soprano; Dawn Pierce, mezzo soprano; Eapen Leubner, tenor, and Jorge Ocasio, bass.
Lehman Center is celebrating its 30th Anniversary Season and receives support from the New York City Department of Cultural Affairs, New York State Council on the Arts, and National Endowment for the Arts. Special $10 tickets for children are underwritten by Con Edison.
A Taste of the Bronx food show is hosted by Bronx Borough President Ruben Diaz, Jr. and produced by The Bronx Tourism Council, a program of BOEDC. Promotional support is provided in part by the NYC & Company Foundation.
