Windies captain appointed ambassador

New West Indies Captain Darren Sammy has been appointed St Lucia’s newest ambassador.

The 26-year-old all-rounder, was presented with his official passport recently by Prime Minister Stephenson King in a special ceremony at the Beausejour Stadium.

Sammy, the first St. Lucian Test cricketer, was feted before an audience that included his parents and his wife Cathy.

During his short speech, Sammy reiterated his desire to restore the enthusiasm lacking in West Indies cricket.

“Cricket is just more than a game to Caribbean people. It’s one unifying force of the Caribbean,” he said.

Sammy was named recently to lead the embattled West Indies, replacing Jamaican Chris Gayle who served as captain for the past three years.

Despite being a member of the Windies side for the last six years, Sammy has played just eight Tests and 43 One-Day Internationals.
