GUYANA VOTE IN DOUBT

Guyana: Guyana’s elections commission was on Wednesday night fixing to announce a winner of presidential and general elections held on Monday but indications were up to press time that the main opposition grouping was unlikely to accept any result showing that they had lost to the incumbent People’s Progressive Party (PPP), which was seeking a fifth consecutive five-year term amidst widespread allegations of corruption, the spectacular growth of the narco trade and over-taxation of ordinary Guyanese. Regents endorse financial aid for undocumented students

People: New York State Board of Regents has endorsed the federal Development, Relief and Education for Alien Minors (DREAM) Act that would allow Caribbean and other immigrant students to obtain permanent residency, earn high school diplomas and go on to college. Comment.

Ceremony commemorates the Howard Beach horror

Price was honored for her continued commitment to coverage of stories addressing the concerns of various communities and in particular her coverage of the ‘Howard Beach Incident’ of December 1986 which shocked New York when Michael Griffith, a Black teen was struck and killed by a passing car as he ran onto the Belt Parkway to escape a group of white teens who were chasing him, following a verbal exchange in Howard Beach, Queens.
